Housing Application Process

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

Defiance College requires all students to live in college-operated housing, unless they meet one of the commuter criteria identified. All current residential students will be expected to participate in the housing selection process unless they are approved for commuter status.

Students must be between the ages of 16 and 25 at the time campus residency begins in order to be eligible for on-campus housing. Parent or legal guardians of students under the age of 18 are required to co-sign the Residence Hall License Agreement. Students who will be 16 at the start of campus residency must have his/her parent or legal guardian sign the Minor in Campus Residency Acknowledgement Form.

HOUSING APPLICATION PROCESS

Defiance College utilizes StarRez as its resident housing software.

All students will use their DC email and password when logging into StarRez.

New Student Process

New students who have recieved their DC email and have setup a password will be able to login to StarRez once applications are being accepted for the following academic year. Typically, the application process opens in late May/early June. Communication on when that will be will come from Admissions or Student Life, as well as an instructional email on how to sign up for housing when logged into StarRez.

Students will be able to select a roommate or request that Residence Life chooses one for them. Students over the age of 19 will typically be placed in Whitney Hall, students 18 and under will be placed in McReynolds Hall. Students will also be asked to choose between the 10, 14, and 19 meal plan.

Returning Student Process

Returning students will login to StarRez and apply for housing for the next academic yearduring the spring semester. Applications happen in the following order:

  1. On-Campus Houses (Priority is  based on the groups collective credit hours)
  2. Grand Avenue Apartments & Jacket Suites (Priority is  based on the groups collective credit hours)
  3. Whitney Hall

Students are responsible for finding their own group and roommates during the application periods, and all housing is subjec to change by Residence Life. All application periods are communicated to students via their school emails, throughout the spring.

Students will not receive a roommate or room assignment until they have completed the housing application, so it is important to complete the application as soon as possible. For questions and concerns about the application, please contact the Office of Residence Life.

ASSIGNMENT PROCESS

On-Campus Houses, Jacket Suites, and Grand Avenue Apartments will be assigned by seniority based on academic credit hours earned. Returning students who did not sign up for an On-Campus House or apartment will be assigned to Whitney Hall . Transfer and older first year students are typically assigned to Whitney HallMcReynolds Hall is reserved for first year students.

All assignments will require roommates if you do not select a roommate during the housing process you will be assigned one. Spots are not guaranteed until a housing contract is signed via StarRez.

ROOM BUYOUT

All residence hall rooms are double occupancy, students must sign up with a roommate, or be assigned one by Residence Life. After the first two weeks of the fall semester, if extra space is available students may have the option to buy out the other half of a room.

  • There is an additional $1000/per semester charge when buying out your room.

DISABILITY & SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCE ACCOMMODATIONS

Students who need to request special housing arrangements (i.e. first floor because they have family members in wheelchairs, a room close to the restroom for medical issues, etc.) may do so by submitting their request  to the Office of Residence Life.

DC pledges to work diligently with any student that may present special medical circumstances which would require them living in a single room without a roommate. We have a limited number of medical singles (1/2 size rooms in Whitney) that are set aside each year to accommodate such needs. In order to apply for special consideration for one of these rooms, complete the following:

1.  A personal statement describing why a medical single is necessary and a detailed letter of explanation from a treating physician or other appropriate clinician is required which further describes how a medical single, in their professional opinion, would assist the student at Defiance College.

2. Provide documentation to Counseling and Accessibility Services.

The Director of Residence Life will consider all petitions and honor approved petitions on a space-available basis.
